Jazz Institute of Chicago dedicated 2022 to the legacy of Louis Armstrong. In addition to the vast free public programming, JIC Members were treated to a four part series of articles that covered Armstrong’s life and music during his years in Chicago. Here is the collection of articles with accompanying recordings for you to enjoy.

PART ONE: LOUIS AND LIL ARMSTRONG IN CHICAGO

LISTEN: "Just Gone" - Louis Armstrong's first recording, 1923, with King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band

LISTEN: "Dippermouth Blues" -- King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, 1923 with Louis Armstrong. At 1:25 Oliver plays a plunger mute solo on cornet; Armstrong plays the second cornet solo. "Dippermouth" was an Armstrong nickname.
