Jazz Institute of Chicago

Remembering Jodie Christian

It has been 20 months since Jodie Christian died, and there has been nary a waking moment since then when someone, somewhere, wasn't sharing heartfelt memories about him – whether discussing his remarkable technique and stylistic range as a pianist or the profound humanitarian impact he had on people.

"Jodie Christian was one of the deepest, most generous and most sincere men I have ever encountered," said trumpeter Brad Goode, who will perform in Christian's honor in a band including the powerful tenor saxophonist (and former Chicagoan) Ron Blake, pianist and JazzCity music director Miguel de la Cerna, bassist Marlene Rosenberg, guitarist Alejandro Urzagaste and drummers George Fludas and Xavier Breaker. "Whenever he played the piano, the music took on a certain intensity and focus that I can only describe as a spiritual quality. Although he was a very quiet and humble man, not widely known outside of his hometown, to those of us in Chicago he was an important musical voice and an inspirational artist.
