Celebrating 45: April 11, 2014 Proclaimed Jazz Institute of Chicago Day

 WHEREAS in 1987, the Congress of the United States of America officially designated the indigenous American music and art form known as Jazz to be “…a rare and valuable national American treasure…” and “…a significant part of our culture and intellectual heritage…”; and
WHEREAS the National Museum of American History has designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities as well as several other national organizations,; and
WHEREAS the Jazz Institute of Chicago, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to nurture and promote jazz in Chicago was founded by a grassroots group of ardent jazz supporters on April 11, 1969; and
WHEREAS the Jazz Institute of Chicago has been serving the city’s music community for 45 years by supporting jazz education in the schools, mentoring young players, commissioning new work and expanding performance opportunities for Chicago artists through the free concerts and festivals they program across the city and throughout the year; and
WHEREAS these programs have celebrated the broad historical spectrum which reflects the diversity of the music and have entertained and educated an equally diverse audience of jazz fans and the general public; and 
WHEREAS the Jazz Institute has helped to establish Jazz made in Chicago as a recognized, respected and important cultural identity in Chicago, the United States and abroad; 
NOW, THEREFORE, I Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of the City of Chicago, do hereby proclaim April 11, 2014 to be Jazz Institute of Chicago Day in Chicago and urge all Chicagoans to recognize the importance of jazz in our city’s cultural life, to appreciate the work of the Jazz Institute of Chicago and join in celebrating their 45th birthday.
