Jazz Institute of Chicago Board member Harry Porterfield was awarded the Thomas and Eleanor Wright award by the Chicago Commission on Human relations at their 61st Annual Luncheon and Award Presentation on Tuesday January 29, 2008.
The Commission on Human Relations applauded Mr. Porterfield's pioneering work in creating the human-interest series "Someone You Should Know" in 1977, along with his other work in the world of TV and radio journalism. The audience of several hundred rose to pay tribute to a man that everyone knows and who humbly accepted his award by saying that his work, and thus the award was a reflection of the many fine people he had had the honor of interviewing on the show.
The Jazz Institute of Chicago's Jazz Links Ensemble provided the musical background for the awards ceremony which was not only appropriate given Harry Porterfield's long-time support of the music, but also introduced a talented group of young musicians to a very appreciative audience.
Congratulations Harry!
