The Jazz Institute of Chicago 45th Anniversary Gala

Wednesday, October 15, 2014

The Drake Hotel | 140 East Walton | Chicago, IL

Back when he was the artistic director of the Chicago Jazz Ensemble – and the first mentor in the Jazz Institute of Chicago's Jazz Links Education Program  trumpet great Jon Faddis challenged the first cohort of Jazz Links students to compose and perform.

Years later, there is no doubt that the Jazz Links Education Program has changed lives – and boosted the future of jazz in Chicago –  by providing serious young musicians not only with hands-on training but also year-round opportunities to perform before the public.

One of the most gifted of the members of the first Jazz Links Student Ensembles, acclaimed trumpeter Marquis Hill, will leave a special imprint on the Jazz Institute's 12th annual gala, on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Drake Hotel. With Faddis joining him as special guest, Hill will lead a Jazz Links Alumni group on a piece specially commissioned for the evening.  The alumni include saxophonists Irvin Pierce and Tim Bennett, pianist Michael King, trombonist JP Floyd, drummer Michael Piolet and Jazz Links Jam Session house bassist Joshua Ramos. Another alumnus, singer-bassist Katie Ernst, will participate in an afterset performance by the distinctive trio, Laurenzi/Ernst/Green

The evening includes a reception, silent auction, seated dinner and our Jazz Excellence Awards which recognize important contributions made by members of our jazz community.
