Remixin' With Verve

Since 2002, the record label 'Verve'  has released a series of compilations known as "Verve Remixed." Basically, club DJs, remixers and producers are given access to the Verve vault of jazz classics to re-invent and expand upon the elements of the originals within a framework of their respective backgrounds. Over a span of 4 discs, several impressive re-workings can be found. Rae & Christian's version of Dinah Washington "Is You Or Is You Ain't My Baby?" is a hot swinging dance revamp.  Joe Claussell's remix of Nina Simone's "Feelin' Good" is a syrupy blend of electronic cool. The Gotan Project's remix of Sarah Vaughan's "Whatever Lola Wants" is a bumping European-influenced stomper. How do you feel about jazz being remixed into dance music or any other kind of music? What do you think of the Verve series yourself? What are the essential ingredients of a successful remix? Do you feel certain artists or forms of jazz lend better to remixing?
