One of the largest of Scandinavian festivals held, the Kongsberg Jazzfestival 2008 took place in Norway this year, featuring an impressive range of artists from Swede Mats Gustaffson to international acts such as USA's Tierney Sutton. While I did not attend this festival, I did read several reviews and accounts of the performances and was suprised to learn about the amount of electronica involved in the artists' shows. This is an element I have yet to see integrated in the Chicago jazz scene. I know many jazz fans have an aversion to or low opinion of electronica. However, I believe all sound can be made into music and this is a deficiency of our local scene that we are not better off without.
