I can only speak for myself when I say that the African tribute to James Brown was a huge ass bomb! First, all of the performers I heard played pretty straight up renditions of James Brown with minimal deviation or injection of their own personality and style. Next, the audience was all wrong. Most of the attendees were hardcore traditional jazz heads invited to a soul-funk sonic experience. Vegetarians at a steakhouse. Worse then that neither pricing nor marketing catered to fans of this type of music - world music fans, hip hop heads, house fans with an inclination toward the deep funk, neo-soul fans, motown fans and straight up funk fans. Folks who want to dance and get with a groove so slick it makes the ground under our feet move of its own accord even when we ourselves remain still. True, these were not the only issues with the show (weak lighting, bad sound etc.) but these were the most glaring and most self-defeatingly crucial. It was a bomb minus the explosion.
