Hot Mama Africa

There has been a recent surge in interest in African music which has coincided with an increase in access to and the availability of African music. Record stores now feature and stock more output from African artists and bands, traversing genres from funk to hi-life to hip-hop. What could this shift in music consumer behavior be attributed to? Is this just part of the dawn of the growing global village or is there more to this trend? Curious, I have not seen much in the way of jazz. Am I just missing something?
