Jazz Institute of Chicago

Getting Out There

So I recently moved from Iowa to Chicago. Well not really recently (time flies...), I've been here for about three years. I'm a drummer, a violinist and a cellist. A bunch of buddies moved here too and we've managed to form a large 32 piece jazz fusion improv band called 'Origin of Animal'. The cast usually rotates; on any day there's no telling which 8 or 9 of us will be performing for a gig which makes for quite the adventurous spectacle. Our machine is not very professional, very thrown together, go with the flow but our music is never bad. So far we've been getting gigs here and there in local bars and cafes (never disappointing the audience) but we want some advice on what we can do to take things to the next level and get more shows at better venues - more exposure. What advice to you more successful jazzians have for us? Any tips? We need all the help we can get!
