Known in Brazil as O Mito (the legend), the prolific Joao Gilberto celebrates his 77th birthday today June 10. Born in Bahia, Brazil, Joao - fate would have it - made his way to Rio where he collaborated with musician/composer Antonio Carlos Jobim to popularize and establish bossa nova ('new wave'). Coming to America and recording with Stan Getz, this momentous meeting of maestros birthed the Grammy-award winning bossa nova classic, "The Girl From Ipanema" with Astrud Gilberto (Joao's wife at the time) on vocals.
