Greg Fishman and Paulinho Garcia: Two for Brazil Plays the Standards

Greg Fishman and Paulinho Garcia: Two for Brazil Plays the Standards

On this session one of Chicago's favorite duos continues implementing their multi-CD master plan with their third recording and gives us a huge 16 tune set of standards, jazz standards, and a couple of bossa novas for good measure.

Eddie Fisher: 42nd Street

Eddie Fisher: 42nd Street

Guitarist Eddie Fisher enjoyed great success in Chicago during the WSDM days of the '60s and early '70s. His album The Third Cup was a big hit—I've seen this album garner high collector's prices among vinyl collectors. Among musicians who lived through this era, his composition, "The Third Cup," is nearly a standard.

The Rich Corpolongo Quartet: Smiles

The Rich Corpolongo Quartet: Smiles

Rich Corpolongo is a multi-reed instrumentalist; he plays soprano and alto saxophones, clarinet and piccolo with equal dexterity. He one of the few who can play both "outside and inside" equally well—with all of the harmonic control and lyricism of bebop plus all the fire of the free avante guard. He is also a composer who has distilled everything from the blues to Charlie Parker and Coltrane to Stockhausen into his work.

Frank Catalano: Live at the Green Mill with Randy Brecker

Frank Catalano: Live at the Green Mill with Randy Brecker

Frank Catalano, about 23-years-old, plays the tenor sax like no one else and seems to have the energy of a nuclear power plant at his fingertips. This live session, recorded earlier this year, confirms that Catalano has total command of modern straight-ahead jazz as it has been applied to the tenor sax. It is apparent that he has been influenced from most of the hard driving tenors, from Coleman Hawkins and Coltrane to Gato Barbieri and Pharaoh Sanders.

Bob Acri: Timeless, The Music of Bob Acri

Bob Acri: Timeless, The Music of Bob Acri

Bob Acri is one of Chicago's veteran piano players, now in his young eighties, he continues to play in the clubs—for over 50 years! Great musicians never retire.

Brian O’Hern and the Model Citizens Big Band: Let’s Make Gravy

Brian O’Hern and his iconoclastic orchestra return for another set of zany and good-humored music. O’Hern’s goal has never been to create timeless music but to give his listeners a good time.

Jeff Parker/Bernard Santacruz/Michael Zerang: Vega

Jeff Parker/Bernard Santacruz/Michael Zerang: Vega

Recorded live at Les 7 Lézards—a jazz club in Paris—“Vega” documents the first two performances by a trio comprised of Chicagoans Jeff Parker (g) and Michael Zerang (d), and French bassist Bernard Santacruz. This unlikely encounter can be credited to Alexandre Pierrepont—a French writer and ethnomusicologist who has been frequently visiting Chicago in the past few years.

The Jim Gailloreto Quintet: The Insider

The Jim Gailloreto Quintet: The Insider

As the title suggests Gailloreto is well known inside Chicago music circles as a go-to guy when you need a great tenor saxophonist. This recording will undoubtedly expand his reputation well beyond Chicago and is a document of his high level of artistry.

Anthony Molinaro and Howard Levy: Live

Anthony Molinaro and Howard Levy: Live

Pianist Molinaro is known for his work as a soloist in the classical arena and has played with orchestras throughout the world. At present he divides his time between Rome and Chicago which led him to play jazz duets with harmonica innovator Howard Levy. This CD is a collection of live recordings from the Green Mill and WFMT in Chicago and other concerts in New York. The individual and collective playing here is at one of the highest human levels possible and suggests an ensemble much larger than a duo.

Deanna Witkowski: Wide Open Window

Deanna Witkowski: Wide Open Window

While in Chicago pianist Deanna Witkowski attended Wheaton College, played good gigs around town, expanded her horizons by traveling and studying, and worked hard apparently all the time. A few years ago she relocated to New York and worked as music director at All Angel’s Episcopal Church. Then her continuous hard work also led to first place in the 2002 Great American Jazz Piano Competition.
