Tony Rankin: Interlude
Pianist, composer and programmer Tony Rankin is nearly synonymous with the group Rankinfyle that performs regularly in Chicago clubs (notably at Philander's and Pops for Champagne) and, with this CD, is looking to expand their horizon. The music here is based on the even 1/8 note, contemporary drumbeats that are based on rock and Latin grooves, fused with modern harmony. Some call this smooth jazz but there is more content and less of the soprano with drum machine formula here. Rankin's music here is more of an extension of the party sound applied to commercials and TV themes.
Every tune has a different story to tell. Heavenly is based on a Latin conga groove with good counterpoint between the electric piano and synth strings. Art Davis contributes his fine flugelhorn to the theme of Lyanna Is Here to achieve a pleasant commercial sound in the style of Herb Alpert and Chuck Mangione. Also, Brian Gephart and Ron Haynes add a fine tenor/trumpet edge to Soothe the Pain, a tune that should find its way to a weekly action-packed TV series. Similar to other composers, Rankin writes tunes that are directly related or inspired by his life experiences and explains them to us in the liner notes.
Rankin is a fine entertainer who can also produce good music that will find its way and be heard in the commercial arena of music.-MV
