Tommy Muellner: It’s All About Time
I’ve been waiting for Tommy to make his move for a few years. I’d see him at the Jazz Fair in the winter and then lose track of him for awhile. With this CD he announces his arrival with a nice touch, swinging ideas and modern harmony. The repertoire consists a couple of very attractive original tunes and interpretations of standards, most of which are the favorites of hip piano players worldwide. His original Donna Samba is worth the price of this recording and I’ve played it on my show many times. It has a lilting Brazilian groove thanks to David Marr and Tim Davis, on bass and drums respectively, and some gorgeous flugelhorn from Art Davis. Most of the album is straight-ahead and every tune has a nice little surprise that keeps the attention level high just wondering what is going to happen next.—M.V.
