Tim AuBuchon: Bluz fer Mo
Tim AuBuchon is new to Chicago, he blew in from Missouri about six years ago to attend Northwestern University, became an educator and represents the new generation of solid players that we should check out. In a world of thousands of tenor players Tim stands out with a mature sound and an exceptional concept for improvising. There is no grandstanding, over-blowing or wasted notes here—only well-chosen notes and solid modern improvising.
On this recording Tim is joined by a very sensitive trio: pianist Jo Ann Daugherty, bassist Patrick Williams, and drummer Ryan Bennett. Like on her CD (see the December 2000 reviews), Jo Ann excels here with here with her sure touch and introspective ideas. Likewise, Pat and Ryan make an excellent rhythm team—these are musicians in their ‘20's that sound as if they have been playing together for 30 years.
The program is as exciting and personal. Tim composed seven of the ten tracks—all of which show great depth and imagination. Every tune is unique and has a special charm accented by solo and duo performances within the quartet arrangements. The remaining three tracks are Monk’s Off Minor, Ornette’s Dee Dee and Don Cherry’s Guinea/Mopti—a very eclectic modern program!
With great persistence and consistent live performances these players will continue to grow and become some of our musical heroes, check them out and support them!—MV
