Mike Ferro: Django by Ferro
This album was a complete surprise and an absolute gem. Mike and Linda Ferro were so captivated by the music and legend of Django Reinhardt that they wrote lyrics to his music. So the music is both fresh and respectful to Django's "Hot Club of Paris."
Mike Ferro is a fine vocalist with a nice tone that fits the music and some real jazz chops. Apart from the original concept itself, much of the strength of this album comes from its musical director, Larry Gray. Not only does he play the bass, he arranged and conducted the band staffed with Chicago heavyweights: Henry Johnson, Phil Gratteau, Peter Saxe, Steve Eisen, Johnny Frigo, Joe Vito, Eddie Johnson, Howard Levy, Art Davis, Bob Lustrea, Eric Schneider and more. Extra compliments to executive producer Denny Nowak for taking a chance on this one that will surely be very popular in international jazz circles. Django and his music live again!—MV
