Marc Pompe: Nobody Else But Me
Marc Pompe is a musician's musician. He sings wonderfully, has a unique sound and plays solid piano too! And then, just when you think you know what he's about, he will compose a new tune with lyrics or show you something new on a standard.
On this recording Marc is accompanied by pianist Larry Novak, bassist Nick Tountas, and drummer Rusty Jones—an incredible trio! There is not a wasted note here. The material is a delightful mix of standards, jazz standards, Brazilian tunes and a couple of Pompe originals. Marc owns "Close Enough for Love"—it's difficult to find a better version anywhere! Also, his treatment of Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debbie" with Gene Lees' lyrics could make any Dad wistful. Then there is great swinging too on the title track, "Joy Spring," and "What Am I Here For?"
Marc's music is for adults and often gives us life questions to ponder, in a beautiful format. Those interested in terrific vocals backed by one of Chicago's finest trios should not miss this one!—MV
