Kathy Kelly: A Different Vibe
Kathy Kelly is now a veteran on the Chicago scene playing the vibes, an instrument nearly indigenous to jazz and often overlooked in a world of synthesis. She has played in Chicago for many years and also ventured to international gigs, including the Montreux Jazz Festival.
All of the tunes are originals, composed by Kathy Kelly, and are performed by her quartet: John McLean on guitars, Dan DeLorenzo on bass and Jim Widlowski on drums and percussion. Kathy's music has a positive happy feel that will improve day and bear repeated listening. I'm particularly fond of her tunes "Calling Eddie Harris" and "K.C. & Samba". Even the complicated Letting Go maintains the joyous feel that is throughout the CD—check the incredible interplay between Kathy and John McLean!
In addition to wonderful playing and writing, the recording and production are as good as it gets, thanks to producer Pat Fleming.—MV
