Joanie Pallatto and King Fleming: The King and I

Joanie Pallatto and King Fleming: The King and I

Joanie Pallatto loves to sing and collaborate with others. This project, enhanced by the legendary King Fleming and his trio, along with guests Von Freeman, Bobby Lewis and Rich Fudoli, is close to a Chicago Superbowl win! All of the prized elements of originality, swing, sound and pacing make this a beautiful album. It has the perfect title too.

There are many artists that have copied and emulated the Chicago sound of the piano trio, defined by King Fleming an others over the long haul. King has been working in Chicago as long as I can remember yet he has a youthful approach, touch and overall sound. The trio is solid; bassist Clifford Griffin and drummer Bill Cochran help set the model for trio playing and sound like they has a ball making this recording.

Among the fourteen tunes recorded there are only four standards. Thus, there are ten original tunes—the bulk of the program, composed by King and many of them have been published as sheet music over the years. In addition to being a swinging CD, this is a time capsule of the works of a great Chicago composer. Joanie Pallatto can sing whatever she wants and does it well. She knows how to get to the essence of a song and perform it as if she were only singing it for you. This truly Chicago recording has the exuberance that will make you happy to be alive!—MV
