Jo Ann Daugherty Trio: Debut

Jo Ann Daugherty Trio: Debut

Pianist Jo Ann Daugherty, along with bassist Shawn Sommer and drummer Ryan Bennett left Kansas City a couple of years ago to play their music in Chicago. Although some club date successes have already passed us without any real public notice, this CD may help change their lives. Very simply, this is a great trio!

The average age here is about 25 but the overall sound shows the experience of seasoned players. Jo Ann has an economical approach to the piano that is very easy to hear. There is no bravura of chops, just a well-defined concept of playing jazz piano that will continue to grow over the years. Bassist Shawn Sommer has a sound that reminds me of Miroslav Vitous and drummer Ryan Bennett is very tasteful and enhances every tune. Together, this is a listening trio—a musical partnership, which must be heard.

Like their move to Chicago, the repertoire is also very courageous, six of the eleven tracks are originals! The other composers range from Larry Young, Wayne Shorter to Ornette Coleman; and, there are two common denominator standards,“Takin’ A Chance on Love” and “Beautiful Love.” Grab this CD, watch for Jo Ann on the clubdate lists and check her out!—MV
