Frank Portolese: Last Call

Frank Portolese: Last Call

Chicago is blessed with several magnificent jazz guitarists and Frank Portolese has been a leader of this six-string fraternity for over 20 years. On this outing, his second release for Southport, Frank gives us five wonderful original tunes, the standard These Foolish Things, and five modern jazz classics.

Two groups are featured: Larry Luchowski, piano: David Marr, bass; and, Tim Davis, drums; and Brian Sandstrom, bass; Rusty Jones, drums. The album is loaded with highlights, check out the fluid improvisation on the introduction to Frank’s tune, Burn Unit and Tim Davis’ sizzling time feel and ride cymbal on ESP. There is also a refreshing version of Miles Davis’ original Milestones, the difficult bebop tune, and not the overly popular modal tune. This is another well-recorded Southport production that belongs in your collection.—M.V.
