Deanna Witkowski: Wide Open Window
While in Chicago pianist Deanna Witkowski attended Wheaton College, played good gigs around town, expanded her horizons by traveling and studying, and worked hard apparently all the time. A few years ago she relocated to New York and worked as music director at All Angel’s Episcopal Church. Then her continuous hard work also led to first place in the 2002 Great American Jazz Piano Competition.
Wide Open Window, Deanna’s second release, is a fountainhead of musical intelligence, wit, and charm. Her playing is distinguished by thoughtful right hand melodies, use of Latin motifs (a nod to mentor Chucho Valdes), great use of modern harmony, and arrangements that tightly package it all. Her balanced program here includes five originals and five standards. The title tune, "Wide Open Window," puts it all together musically and expresses her fine work ethic.
Recorded in Chicago, Deanna is joined by bassist Jonathan Paul, drummer Tom Hipskind and saxophonist Donny McCaslin all of whom never misplace a note. Their playing is flawless.
Deanna returns to Chicago to perform a few times a year and can also be found playing gigs in New York. Check out her schedule at http://web.archive.org/web/20030829220502/http://www.deannawitkowski.com... MV
