Chicago Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra: Live and Screamin'
Lenny King comes from the education arena of jazz and initially developed the CMO to focus on the music of Stan Kenton. Although the program has expanded to included a few non-Kenton arrangers, Stan is the model here and that's OK! Although Kenton specified that he did not want his music to linger in ghost bands, we are thankful to Lenny King for presenting this music—we still need to hear this music performed live!
Many of the favorite charts are here in this live session recorded at Chicago's clubhouse for big band jazz, FitzGerald's of Berwyn. Guest trumpeter Dennis Noday has the "MF" feature on Maria and MacArthur Park and wins the crowd with his great tone, high notes and overall musicianship. The band is also loaded with great soloists including, Mark Colby, Terry Connell, Don Stille, Frank Catalano and Charlie Braugham among others.
I imagine that everyone who was at the club that night has a copy of this CD. But this is also recommended to all that love modern, swinging big band in all of its living glory and power.—MV
