Bradley Parker-Sparrow & Joanie Pallatto: We Are Not Machines
Sparrow and Joanie Pallatto, owners of Southport Records, have been supporting Chicago artists most of their professional life. Their label has released over 100 projects of Chicago jazzers over the last 23 years and their studio is always in demand for creative projects.
On this release Sparrow and JP have assembled a soundscape or montage of original music that is neither pop nor jazz—it is Sparrow music. Composed in part for John Covert's film Watch, Sparrow sets various quiet, introspective moods with his machine: 9' Baldwin piano, a battery of synth sounds, drum loops and percussion, for diva JP to soar over as the human element.
Other human elements include new beat poet Rick Kogan, trumpeter Billy Brimfield, Larry Gray's cello and bass, bassists Tatsu Aoki and John Magnan and percussionist Alejo Poveda. Amid the layers of music and vocals there are also recordings of political leaders, from Churchill, to LBJ and JFK with their signature statements.
This is a very successful recording, perfect for a movie soundtrack. It may not be jazz nor pop but it is very interesting music that is easy to hear (but not to be confused with easy listening). It will draw you into Sparrow's world of poetry and music: sometimes critical, romantic, fatalistic and always articulate. Challenge your ears, and musical habits with Sparrow music!-MV
