Bobby Lewis: In the Forefront & Incantation
Chicago has waited far too long for the Forefront on CD! This is a 2 CD collection of two previously issued LP's documents this original Chicago group as it sounded in the '70's.
The concept here is a trumpet section, bass and drums with a few guest artists. Although this may seem limiting to those who long for saxes and bones, the exceptional writing and playing keeps the interest level high. The players are indeed Chicago's finest: George Bean, Art Hoyle, Russ Iverson and Bobby Lewis, trumpets, flugels, etc; Rufus Reid, bass; and, Jerry Coleman, drums. The guests are Larry Novak, Cy Touff and Steve LaSpina. Similarly, in addition to Bobby Lewis, the composing and arranging was handled by the experienced minds of Joe Daley, Art Lauer, Les Hooper, Richard Manners, Bobby Ojeda and Rennick Ross.
I remember going to hear this group at the Museum of Contemporary Art in '75. I was overwhelmed then, as I am today. In a world of retro and copycats, it's great to hear this original music again. I hope that it's only a matter of time until we hear it live again—MV
