The Jazz Institute of Chicago's Straight Ahead Summer Jazz Camp for Music Educators, designed by The Chicago Jazz Ensemble (CJE) in residence at Columbia College Chicago, offers an opportunity to study and play with renowned Jazz artists and educators including Chicago Jazz Ensemble Artistic Director Jon Faddis, Columbia College Chicago Music Chair J. Richard Dunscomb, music educator Jose Diaz, and vocalist Bobbi Wilsyn among others.

The camp includes seminars, jam sessions with, and performances by Jon Faddis and the CJE, and a Chicago Jazz History tour led by historian Timuel Black. Straight Ahead is designed to advance and promote mastery of Jazz for music educators of all skill levels. Have fun learning beginning, intermediate and advanced techniques in improvisation and polishing your woodwinds, brass, vocal and rhythm section techniques.

All this, plus you can earn 30 CPDUs for the low cost of $110.

Jazz History Tour: Timuel Black

To get everyone in the mood, the week starts off with a bus tour of the Jazz Stroll--an area on Chicago's South side that was bursting at the seams with Jazz clubs. Historian Timuel Black leads the tour, with a stop for lunch in Bronzevile.

Jazz Styles: Origins to Swing: Jon Faddis

Origins to Swing is the first clinic of the week-long Jazz camp. Artistic Director of The Chicago Jazz Ensemble Jon Faddis gives an overview of Jazz starting with the various influences assembled in New Orleans in the late nineteenth century, continuing through the style of Louis Armstrong and the Swing Era, and ending with the persistence of Swing even after the advent of BeBop. "Swing" makes up the majority of a school's big band repertory and is the introduction to Jazz for most music students. Band directors need to be fluent in this style and students need to understand its relevance.

Jazz Styles: BeBop & Beyond: Jon Faddis

Artistic Director for The Chicago Jazz Ensemble Jon Faddis will address BeBop, initiated by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie in the early 1940s, and trace the various movements it influenced between then and the current day including Hard Bop, Cool Jazz, Soul Jazz, Fusion, etc. BeBop and the ensuing styles are utilized in both small and large group settings by Jazz ensembles and it is important that band directors understand BeBop phraseology and the theory behind the various movements in Jazz conceived as an extension of - or reaction against - BeBop.

Jazz Styles: Latin Jazz: Jose Diaz

Guest Clinician Jose Diaz will address the influences of music from Latin America and the Caribbean upon early Jazz and Swing, the fusion of BeBop with Cuban music led by Dizzy Gillespie, Bossa Nova and the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, and the more recent explosion of Latin Jazz into the modern consciousness. With the concurrent influx of students with Latin American ancestry and the general popularity of its rhythms and sounds, Latin Jazz is an important avenue to capture the interestof young student musicians.

New Music Selection is a lecture clinic designed to assist band directors with choosing music for their student ensembles to play. Learn to build a repertoire of music for a student Jazz ensemble that includes new arrangements and compositions. Navigate music retailers to find just the music you want. Design programs that cover a variety of styles and showcase the strengths of your group while pushing your young musicians to new heights.

It promises to be a lively discussion for participants and clinicians to share ideas, network with other music education professionals, and make suggestions for next year's camp.

Jazz Improvisation I: Jose Diaz

Jazz Improvisation clinics are laboratory style clinics. Jazz Improvisation I is for participants with little to no experience actually playing Jazz and improvising. On their primary instruments (including the voice), participants will learn variants of the blues, rhythm changes (based on Gershwin's I Got Rhythm), and other Jazz standards. For each piece covered, participants will learn the underlying harmonies (chord changes), cliché improvisational phrases (riffs), and scale/mode choices. By the end of the week, all participants will be more comfortable and knowledgeable in encouraging students to improvise.

Jazz Improvisation II: Jarrard Harris

Jazz Improvisation II is a clinic for participants with a basic understanding of Jazz harmony and a moderate amount of experience playing and improvising on blues and Jazz standards. On their primary instruments (including the voice), participants will learn Swing-era Jazz standards, BeBop tunes based on those Jazz standards, modal Jazz, and Bossa Nova. Participants will learn the underlying harmonies (chord changes), BeBop vocabulary and phraseology, and chord substitution.

Jazz Improvisation III: Jon Faddis
Tuesday-Friday, July 21-24, 2009 @ 12:00 PM CCC Music Center Rm 411
Skill Level: advanced, elective
Jazz Improvisation III is a clinic for participants with a moderate understanding of Jazz harmony and experience playing and improvising on BeBop and Latin Jazz of the mid--20th century. On their primary instruments (including the voice), participants will learn music in various post--BeBop trends such as that of John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter. Participants will learn the underlying harmonies (chord changes), application of advanced scales and modes, and melodic patterns to be employed in some of the music.

Jazz Piano Techniques

Jazz Piano Techniques is a laboratory style clinic open to all participants regardless of the level of their piano skills. This is the ideal clinic for beginners to learn how Jazz harmony works. Participants will learn the basic things a Jazz pianist must be able to perform: How to read chord symbols and provide harmonic accompaniment (comp) using basic rootless piano voicings; Montuno and other patterns for Latin Jazz styles; stride; walking a bass line in the left hand; comping for oneself while improvising; and other useful piano techniques.

Jazz Guitar Techniques is a laboratory style clinic open to participants whose primary instrument is the guitar and others who want to learn more about Jazz guitar playing. Participants will learn the basic things a Jazz guitarist must be able to perform: chord voicings for the guitar typical of specific sub--genres of Jazz; rhythmic patterns for comping in Swing, Bossa Nova, and others; and abilities, techniques, and approaches to various types of acoustic and electric guitars.

Jazz Bass Techniques is a laboratory style clinic open to participants whose primary instrument is the bass and others who want to learn more about Jazz bass playing. Participants will learn the basic things a Jazz bassist must be able to perform: how to walk bass lines in two, three, and four; rhythmic and note patterns for styles such as Bossa Nova and Mambo; and bowing, slapping, and other advanced techniques for the acoustic bass and electric bass guitar.

Jazz Drum & Latin Percussion Techniques is a laboratory style clinic open to participants whose primary instrument is the drum set or Latin percussion and others who want to learn more about drums and percussion. Participants will learn the basic things a Jazz drummer or Latin percussionist must be able to perform: how to achieve drum set feels characteristic of different time periods and sub--genres of Jazz; patterns for Latin percussion instruments in styles like Samba and Mambo; and proper execution of different types of sticks, mallets, and hand drumming.

Rhythm Section Techniques is designed to give participants a better sense of how to instruct a Jazz rhythm section to be cohesive and effective in a variety of styles. This clinic will pull together the lessons learned in the Piano, Guitar, Bass, and Drum/Percussion technique clinics. Participants will learn the roles played by each of the rhythm section players in Swing, BeBop, Samba, and others. Participants less experienced with the rhythm section will gain the knowledge to encourage and demand a higher level of performance from student rhythm sections. More experienced participants will gain ideas on how to bring students along faster and with less frustration.

New Music Reading: J. Richard Dunscomb, Jon Faddis & Jose Diaz

New Music Reading is a laboratory clinic and a follow-up on the New Music Selection clinic earlier on Friday. Participants will form a Jazz ensemble (with the help of The CJE) and Mr. Dunscomb will obtain some new arrangements from publishers to be read.

Brass Techniques for Jazz Ensembles: Audrey Morrison with The CJE 's Brass Section

Brass Techniques for Jazz Ensembles is open to all participants regardless of their principal instrument and designed to give participants a better sense of how to develop a cohesive brass section in a Jazz orchestra. Learn the typical roles for every part from lead trumpet to bass trombone and how to properly employ often called-upon techniques, like doits, shakes, usage of mutes, and brass doubles. The live brass section will play excerpts from pieces written for Jazz orchestra in a variety of styles. Brass players attending will be invited to sit-in with The CJE brass section for hands-on experience.

Woodwind Techniques for Jazz Ensembles: Dan Nicholson with The CJE's Sax Section

Woodwind Techniques for Jazz Ensembles is open to all participants regardless of their principal instrument and designed to give participants a better sense of how to develop a cohesive saxophone section in a Jazz orchestra. Learn the typical roles for every part from lead alto to bari sax and the importance of the flute and clarinet as the primary woodwind doubles for the modern professional saxophonist. The live saxophone section will play excerpts from pieces written for Jazz orchestra in a variety of styles. Woodwind players are invited to sit-in with The CJE sax section for hands-on experience.

Vocal Jazz Techniques: Bobbi Wilsyn

Vocal Jazz Techniques is open to all participants regardless of their principal instrument and designed to give participants a better sense of how to encourage, utilize, and develop vocalists in student Jazz ensembles. Learn to interpret Jazz standards with lyrics and scat or create lyrics for tunes without them. Learn proper microphone technique and how to succeed as a vocalist in any sub-genre of Jazz. The live rhythm section will play along with volunteer vocalists. Participants will gain the knowledge to encourage and demand a higher level of performance from student Jazz vocalists.

Jamming with Jon Faddis
Tuesday--Thursday July 21-23, 2009 @ 4:00 PM, Friday July 24 @ 3:30 PM CCC Music Center Concert Hall

Jon Faddis will host a Jam Session that features participants alongside members of The Chicago Jazz Ensemble. It is an opportunity to relax and just play the blues, rhythm changes, Jazz standards, or whatever else the session leader calls. Performance by The Chicago Jazz Ensemble Tuesday--Friday, July 21-24, 2009 @ 5:00 PM CCC Music Center Concert Hall Skill Levels: all At the end of each intense day of clinics, participants will be treated to a performance by The CJE. Led by Artistic Director Jon Faddis, The Chicago Jazz Ensemble will perform a set of music matched to the Jazz Styles topic of the day; Swing on Tuesday, BeBop on Wednesday, and Latin Jazz on Thursday. The evening performance will pull together the lessons of the day in a way that educates and entertains in a way that only The CJE can do.
